Inlays and Onlays Treatment

We know that keeping your natural teeth where possible is important, that’s why we recommend dental Inlays and Onlays for a more natural smile.

Dental Inlays and Onlays are created to specifically fit the size and shape of the cavity or damaged area of your tooth. They are created outside of the mouth as one solid piece and cemented into place.

Unlike a crown they only repair the part of the tooth that is damaged or decaying, meaning that the remaining healthy part of your tooth stays put. They are also made to match the colour of your tooth, so they look natural in place.

Why an Inlay might be Right for You

If you develop a cavity that is larger in size, a traditional filling may not be strong enough to maintain the structure of the tooth, this is where we would use an Inlay. Also, if you have damaged part of the tooth but much of the tooth remains in good condition Inlay may be the best course of treatment. An Inlay is made from porcelain, created to fit the exact area that needs restoration. They give a more natural look and are generally more durable than regular fillings.

Why an Onlay might be Right for You

Dental Onlays is a dental restoration that covers both the tooth edge and its cusps. Unlike an Inlay, which is used for cavities found at the grooves of your teeth, a Dental Onlay can also cover points higher up around your tooth’s edges so may be required if there is greater damage to your tooth, but not severe enough for a crown. Getting this type of restorative procedure done requires similar preparation as getting one done with an Inlay.

Once your treatment is complete you will be able to carry on as normal and should not notice the new addition to your tooth. You can take care of your Inlays & Onlays by continuing good dental hygiene and maintaining regular check-ups with your dentist.

How Treatment for Inlays and Onlays Work

In preparation for your dental Inlay or Onlay, your dentist will numb the area surrounding your damaged tooth.

Once numbed your dentist will drill into the affected tooth, remove any old fillings, and clean out any decay, leaving only the healthy part of your tooth remaining.

The area will be prepared in a special shape by the drill, an impression will be taken and porcelain will be used to create the Inlay or Onlay for your tooth matching its colour.

On your second visit after your Inlay or Onlay has been made, it will be cemented in place by your dentist so your tooth feels as good as new.

An Inlay is made to fit between the cusps of a back tooth and only covers part of the biting surface. If a dental Onlay fully encloses one or more ridges, it will be larger than an Inlay.

When a tooth has suffered damage from decay or trauma, and a simple filling is not enough, but not so big as to need an entire crown (cap), then an Inlay might be perfect. Both of these indirect treatments are considered “indirect fillings” because the restoration itself is custom-fabricated at a lab before being bonded onto your damaged teeth during dental office visits.

The tooth is prepared for the Inlay or Onlay by removing any decay and reshaping it. A model of the teeth with a temporary filling then goes to an external laboratory, which creates a matching Inlay or Onlay that will take a few days to be ready. It is then permanently attached to the tooth on a second visit.
