The tooth is repaired by shaving the problematic tooth down and placing a prosthetic crown over the top to provide a healthy and natural looking tooth. This type of treatment usually requires 2 appointments.
There are various types of crowns.
Metal Crowns:
These can be made of different types of metal including gold. Metal crowns withstand biting and chewing forces well and probably last the longest in terms of wear down. In addition to this, metal crowns rarely chip or break. However, the metallic colour and the high price of gold is the main drawback. It could be a good choice for out-of-sight molars.
Porcelain-fused-to-metal:
This is an option that is more aesthetically pleasing. However, more wearing to the opposing teeth occurs with this crown type compared with metal or resin crowns. The crown’s porcelain portion can also chip or break off. Sometimes the metal underlying the crown’s porcelain can show through as a dark line, especially at the gum line and even more so if your gums recede. These crowns can be a good choice for front or back teeth as well as long bridges where the metal is needed for strength.
All ceramic or all porcelain dental crowns provide better natural colour match than any other crown type and may be more suitable for people with metal allergies. All-ceramic crowns can be used for front and back teeth.
What is a bridge?
A bridge is a fixed dental restoration (fixed dental prosthesis) used to replace one or more missing teeth by joining an artificial tooth definitively to adjacent teeth. Its sole purpose is to replace the missing teeth, but unlike dentures it will remain in place and not be removable.
Like a crown, your bridge can be made from a choice of materials. Your dentist will be able to advise you on the best choice for your needs.

How Treatment for Crowns and Bridges Works
The dental crown and dental bridge procedure will happen over a couple of appointments. On your first appointment your dentist will firstly prep and take an impression of the area.
If you are having a crown they will drill down the existing tooth so it’s like a peg, this is what your new crown will sit over and be fixed on to. An impression will then be taken to be sent off to the dental technician to make your new white teeth caps.
If you are having a bridge, your dentist will take an impression of the teeth surrounding your gap which will support the bridge. This impression will be sent to the dental technician so they can create your bridge. Your bridge is basically a false tooth that will be secured onto the neighbouring teeth to keep it fixed in place.
While you wait for your next appointment, we can provide you with a temporary crown or bridge to cover the area. We will then book you in to have your crown or bridge fitted once it’s arrived.

If everything is good, the restoration is cemented permanently onto your teeth.
A good quality restoration will take several weeks to be manufactured meaning that you have a temporary crown or bridge in the meantime. Quality work cannot be done in short spaces of time, so it is important to plan ahead for this reason as well.
