Crowns or bridges can help to restore your teeth and prevent unsightly gaps and risk of further problems caused by damaged or decaying teeth.
What is a Crown?
A crown is a type of dental restoration that completely caps or encircles a tooth. It may be needed when a large cavity threatens the health of a tooth. The tooth is repaired by shaving the problematic tooth down and placing a prosthetic crown over the top to provide a healthy and natural looking tooth. This type of treatment usually requires 2 appointments.
There are various types of crowns.
Metal Crowns:
These can be made of different types of metal including gold. Metal crowns withstand biting and chewing forces well and probably last the longest in terms of wear down. In addition to this, metal crowns rarely chip or break. However, the metallic colour and the high price of gold is the main drawback. It could be a good choice for out-of-sight molars.
Porcelain-fused-to-metal:
This is an option that is more aesthetically pleasing. However, more wearing to the opposing teeth occurs with this crown type compared with metal or resin crowns. The crown’s porcelain portion can also chip or break off. Sometimes the metal underlying the crown’s porcelain can show through as a dark line, especially at the gum line and even more so if your gums recede. These crowns can be a good choice for front or back teeth as well as long bridges where the metal is needed for strength.
All ceramic or all porcelain dental crowns provide better natural colour match than any other crown type and may be more suitable for people with metal allergies. All-ceramic crowns can be used for front and back teeth.
What is a bridge?
A bridge is a fixed dental restoration (fixed dental prosthesis) used to replace one or more missing teeth by joining an artificial tooth definitively to adjacent teeth. Its sole purpose is to replace the missing teeth, but unlike dentures it will remain in place and not be removable.
Like a crown, your bridge can be made from a choice of materials. Your dentist will be able to advise you on the best choice for your needs.
Wild Smiles offer crowns and bridges as an effective option for patients, and our Dentists can evaluate your suitability following a full examination.

The dental crown and dental bridge procedure will happen over a couple of appointments. On your first appointment your dentist will firstly prep and take an impression of the area.
If you are having a crown they will drill down the existing tooth so it’s like a peg, this is what your new crown will sit over and be fixed on to. An impression will then be taken to be sent off to the dental technician to make your new white teeth caps.
If you are having a bridge, your dentist will take an impression of the teeth surrounding your gap which will support the bridge. This impression will be sent to the dental technician so they can create your bridge. Your bridge is basically a false tooth that will be secured onto the neighbouring teeth to keep it fixed in place.
While you wait for your next appointment, we can provide you with a temporary crown or bridge to cover the area. We will then book you in to have your crown or bridge fitted once it’s arrived.

Restorations last for 7-15 years on average, but they can be weakened by not maintaining oral hygiene or allowing gum disease to take hold. Trauma also has an effect and it's important that you visit your dentist as soon as possible if this happens so the damage caused is reduced.
No, crowns are often fitted without a root canal.
Not necessarily. It might be more sensible and economical to have a bridge if the teeth either side of a gap require crowns.
Crowns can look very natural. Whether your goal is a Hollywood grin or an everyday smile, we have what it takes for every patient's needs.
First, the area is numbed so you can feel no pain. The teeth are prepared and cleaned for a restoration to fit over them better. This preparation takes time and detail work but it's important that it happens before any restorations can be made by our dental lab technicians. For this phase of treatment your temporary replacement looks like real teeth! Once they're ready we try them in and make sure everything fits correctly with their proper bite as well as how good they look on your smile! If everything is good, the restoration is cemented permanently onto your teeth.
A good quality restoration will take several weeks to be manufactured meaning that you have a temporary crown or bridge in the meantime. Quality work cannot be done in short spaces of time, so it is important to plan ahead for this reason as well.
We only use the best quality crowns, bridges and veneers are used for all patients.
